Over 75 years ago, a small group of New York State employees started their own credit union. Today, their creation is more than 180,000 members strong, with over $1.8 billion in assets!

How did we get from there to here?

The answer lies in the way we treat members: with the attention they deserve... It’s the kind of service that helped us grow steadily from our beginnings in 1934—when the very idea of credit unions was still new—to nearly a tenfold increase in membership three decades later.

This dedication to members influenced the way we grew—exponentially—in the 1970s and 1980s. We introduced an array of new services for member convenience: traveler’s cheque's, share certificates, share drafts, overdraft protection, home mortgages and Visa® cards. Our first merger, with Syracuse State Employees Federal Credit Union, brought our brand of service beyond the Capital Region and a recent merger with Niagara Frontier State Employees Federal Credit Union will enable SEFCU to serve the Buffalo region as well.

Today, SEFCU ranks as the largest credit union in the Capital Region—and is among the 70 largest in the country. We serve members in the Capital Region, Binghamton, Syracuse, and Buffalo with 39 branches, over 75 proprietary ATMs, and a staff of more than 500. Demonstrating the credit union philosophy of "people helping people," our employees participate in countless community fundraising activities to benefit children and those in need. We have established branches in such financially underserved neighborhoods as Albany's Arbor Hill and Schenectady's Hamilton Hill and recently received approval to expand our underserved initiatives to Montgomery and Erie Counties.
