A credit union is simply a nonprofit, cooperative financial institution owned and operated by members. A volunteer board, elected by the members, manages the credit union’s ongoing affairs. Organized to serve, credit unions provide members with a safe place to save and borrow at reasonable rates.

Federal credit unions are chartered, regulated and insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), a U.S. government agency created for just this purpose. In federal credit unions, member accounts are insured up to at least $250,000 per member account, and up to $250,000 for IRA accounts. As a result, your money is safe when it’s in a federal credit union like SEFCU.
