- Plan type. You can choose from two basic kinds of pension plan:
- Defined Benefit Plan. You guarantee a pension amount equal to x% of an employee’s salary if he/she works for you for a specified number of years before retiring.
- Defined Contribution Plan. You agree to invest an amount equal to x% of the employee’s salary annually, and the employee can choose to invest this money in a variety of investment options.
- Tax implications. Most plans enable you, as the business owner, to deduct the money you set aside for employee pensions—or even your own pension—from your taxable business assets.
