Safety tips for using an ATM

ATMs provide quick, convenient access to your money. Follow these important safety tips and safely use ATMs whenever you need cash:

  • Memorize your Personal Identification Number (PIN). Do not write your PIN on your SEFCU Visa® Check Card or leave it in your wallet.

  • Keep your PIN private. Someone you trust today may not be trustworthy tomorrow. If you suspect unauthorized use of your card, notify SEFCU immediately.

  • Shield the keypad from people in line. Don’t let others waiting in line see your PIN or account number.

  • Always take your receipt with you. Receipts contain confidential account information, so take it with you and shred it before you discard it.

  • When using an ATM after dark, go with another person. If you go to an ATM and see someone who looks suspicious, leave that machine and find another one.

  • Have your transactions ready before going to the ATM. Fill out your deposit slip, place your checks or cash in an envelope and seal it and have your debit card ready before you approach the ATM.

  • Don’t fall for “con” games. If anyone asks you to withdraw money for any reason, leave the area immediately. Notify SEFCU and local law enforcement officials of any criminal activity.

  • Lock your car doors when using a drive-up ATM. This will help keep you safe when accessing an ATM.
